‘Look Back in Tolerance’ 2018
I spent a lot of this afternoon writing down bits of dialogue and some of the statements on the intertitles of “Intolerance” (1916). It helps take me back to the film and understand it better if I think about what the director has written on those cards and what the people have actually said to each other. Especially in silent films. There’s so little dialogue that it’s important to notice what dialogue is so important the filmmaker stopped the flow of images, inserted a card, then resumed the flow of images. It’s eye-opening in fact.
